Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.Safety Section
Due to chemical differences compared to diesel fuel, materials that are suitable for use with diesel fuel are not always suitable for use with biodiesel. The use of incompatible nonmetallic materials such as natural rubber material in hoses and o-rings can cause excessive swelling, degradation, and other problems that can result in internal and/or external fuel leaks. The use of incompatible metals such as zinc and copper can result in accelerated corrosion of those components. Also, incompatible metals such as zinc and copper accelerate the oxidation and degradation of the biodiesel. The degraded Biodiesel results in the formation of sediment that can clog fuel filters. Oxidized biodiesel is more prone to fuel system deposits in fuel pumps, injector orifice holes, and tips causing power loss and excessive black smoke. Due to an increasing amount of government mandates and customer interest, Tier 4 machines and engines must be compatible with blends of biodiesel up to 20% (B20). Additional compatibility up to B100 is desirable as the use of higher blends of Biodiesel is also common. Pre-Tier 4 machines and engines and machines without aftertreatment may use biodiesel blends >B20 if the quality and guidelines published by Caterpillar are followed. SEBU6250 provides detailed information for the use of biodiesel fuel.Prohibited Materials
Table 1 below, contains a list of prohibited materials that must not be used within the fuel system. This list should be considered when selecting and designing any fuel system components such as the fuel tank or fuel cooler. Particular care should be taken with the application of any plating and/or coatings that are used.Use of these materials may contaminate the fuel leading to choking of the injector nozzle.
