Information:
Each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near the engine it should be cleaned up. Accumulated grease and oil on an engine is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water at PM Level 2 or every 483 000 km (300,000 miles).Wipe clean all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing.
If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. If leaking is suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended service intervals prescribed in this Manual until a leak is found or fixed, or until the suspicion for a leak has been proven to be false.Starting the Engine
This diesel engine is equipped with an electric air intake heater system to aid cold weather starting and reduce white smoke. DO NOT spray ether into the air intake where it may come in contact with the heater elements. Use starting fluid ONLY if the vehicle is equipped with the optional automatic ether injection system or immediate engine damage may result.
Startability will be improved at temperatures below 0°C (+32°F) by the use of a cylinder block coolant heater or other means to heat the crankcase oil. This will help alleviate white smoke and misfire during cold weather start-up. To assist in engine warm-up, close the winter front to block the radiator and restrict air to the fan.In extreme conditions, use a heat tent over the engine compartment and a space heater to aid in starting. Refer to Cold Weather Operation topic in this Manual for additional information. Operate the priming pump if the engine has NOT been run for several days or more.If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch and wait two minutes to allow the starter motor to cool before using it again. Start the engine using the following procedure:1. Apply the parking brake. Place the manual transmission shift lever in "N" (NEUTRAL). Disengage the flywheel clutch (if equipped) by fully depressing clutch pedal (manual transmission) to remove the transmission drag (especially in cold weather) and prevent movement of the vehicle/truck. Depressing the clutch pedal in cold weather can mean the difference between starting and not starting. Depressing the clutch in warm weather produces faster starts and reduces battery drain.Pre-heat Cycle
If the temperature is below 0°C (+32°F), wait until the engine INTAKE HEATER light goes off before cranking the engine. The engine air intake heater system has a pre-heat function to improve cold weather starting.2. Turn the ignition switch key to the RUN or ON position. The ignition key should remain in the RUN position to automatically energize the air intake heater system for 30 seconds.
DO NOT pump the accelerator pedal. Pumping the accelerator pedal will in no way assist in starting the engine.
Depress accelerator fully and release in cold weather. Always depress accelerator (in any weather) approximately 1/3 of travel before cranking and hold during engine cranking. Crank the engine (push the crank button or turn the ignition
