Information:
Never add coolant or water to an overheated engine, engine damage can result. Allow the engine to cool first.NEVER USE WATER ONLY FOR COOLANT SOLUTION. All water is corrosive at engine operating temperature and may contribute to cylinder wall pitting. The cooling system should be protected with a minimum of 3% to 6% concentration of liquid supplemental coolant additive at all times, regardless of the concentration of antifreeze.DO NOT use Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant. If the engine or vehicle is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with freezing temperatures, the cooling system must be protected to the lowest expected outside (ambient) temperature or drain the system prior to storage. Refer to the Truck Owner Manual for information on your cooling system arrangement.
NEVER OPERATE WITHOUT A THERMOSTAT INSTALLED IN THE COOLING SYSTEM. The cooling system design is dependent upon the thermostat (water temperature regulator) to maintain proper engine temperatures for most efficient combustion. Cooling system problems can arise without a thermostat. Operation without a thermostat will result in excessive cooling. Low operating temperatures will cause sludge formation and excessive carbon build-up on critical engine ccCoolant Water
The minerals (calcium and magnesium) in hard water can combine with cooling system conditioner additives (silicates and phosphates) and drop out of solution, collecting inside the heat exchanger and/or expansion tank, and on high temperature surfaces in the engine. The mineral deposits (silicates, phosphates, calcium and magnesium) reduce the effectiveness of the cooling system, especially after a number of heating and cooling cycles.Distilled water is preferred because of less mineral drop out than hard or drinking water. Drinking water, artificially softened with salt, is not recommended for use in your engine's cooling system. Use water that meets the minimum acceptable water requirement to prevent drop-out of these chemical compounds. If minimally acceptable water is NOT available, the system must be cleaned/flushed/refilled Every One Year or 50 000 km (31,000 miles). To determine your water characteristics, contact the local water department, agricultural agent or an independent laboratory to perform the testing service.Antifreeze
Caterpillar recommends that the coolant mix contain a minimum of 30% Caterpillar Antifreeze, or equivalent and acceptable water to maintain an adequate cavitation temperature for efficient water pump performance.
Recommended Coolant Mixture (Initial Fill)
Premix coolant solution to provide protection to the lowest expected outside (ambient) temperature. Pure undiluted antifreeze will freeze at -23°C (-10°F). Check the specific gravity of the antifreeze/coolant solution frequently in cold weather to ensure adequate freeze protection.Caterpillar recommends that the coolant mix contain a minimum of 30% Caterpillar Antifreeze and 70% distilled or deionized water. Only use a greater concentration (above 30%) of Caterpillar Antifreeze as needed for anticipated outside (ambient) temperatures. Do not exceed a coolant mixture of 60% antifreeze to 40% water since a concentration above 60% antifreeze will reduce the engine's freeze protection and increase the possibility of deposit formation in the cooling system.Caterpillar Antifreeze is formulated with a low silicate content and the proper coolant additives for heavy duty diesel engines.
