Information:
Ether is poisonous and flammable. Keep ether cylinders out of the reach of unauthorized personnel.Breathing ether vapors or repeated contact of ether with skin can cause personal injury.Use ether only in well ventilated areas.Use ether with care to avoid fires.Do not smoke while changing ether cylinders.Do not store ether cylinders in the operator's compartment.Do not store ether cylinders in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 48°C (120°F).Discard ether cylinders properly. Do not puncture or burn ether cylinders.
The Testing And Adjusting procedures use the wiring, components and connectors as shown in the Automatic Ether Injection System Schematic at the end of this module. For an accurate representation of the vehicle, see the respective Electrical System Schematic module. The description "with MPPS" and "without MPPS" are used throughout this manual: * "with MPPS" describes vehicles with the multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS) function. "with MPPS" vehicles use the 3E3778 Ether Injection Control with an engine oil pressure sensor.* "without MPPS" describes vehicles without the multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS) function. "without MPPS" vehicles use either the earlier 9X5303 Ether Injection Control or the 3E3778 without an engine oil pressure sensor.
Part No. Location Of Ether Injection ControlThe Part No., as described above, identifies the "with MPPS" or "without MPPS" capabilities. The part number and change level are stamped on the ether injection control. The 3E3778 Ether Injection Control replaces the 9X5303 Ether Injection Control. 3E3778 is capable of operating "with MPPS" or "without MPPS". The harness code determines whether the MPPS function is enabled or not.Troubleshooting
Inspect all component and harness connections before any component is replaced. If these connections are not tight they can be the cause of electrical problems, either permanent or intermittent (come and go). Make sure the connections are tight before other tests are made.Failure of an electrical component can cause or be caused by the failure of one or more other components. Always find and correct the cause of electrical component failure before making a replacement of the component. The 6V7070 Digital Multimeter or equivalent Caterpillar multimeter should be used for making continuity checks or voltage measurements. For instruction on use of the 6V7070, see Special Instructions, Form No. SEHS7734. The Testing And Adjusting procedures use the wiring, components and connectors as shown in the Automatic Ether Injection System Schematic at the end of this module. For an accurate representation of the vehicle, see the respective Electrical System Schematic module.System Diagnostics
The Automatic Ether Injection System provides a number of built-in diagnostic capabilities. These are designed to make service and maintenance of the system as simple as possible. The Troubleshooting section details the use of the system diagnostics. The ether injection control determines when an ether cylinder needs replaced and determines the source of most electrical faults in the ether injection system. The conditions that correspond to the operation of the warning lamps and warning alarm are listed in the Warning Indicator Problems section. Electrical system faults that are
