Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information. There have been several instances of issues with certain fuel injection pumps on certain Generator Sets. These issues with the fuel injection pump have been caused by the following:
Low lubricity fuel that causes accelerated internal fuel injection pump wear
Formation of fuel gums, sludge, and deposits that causes stability issues
Water contamination of the fuel that causes internal fuel injection pump corrosionNote: The Delphi fuel injection pump should be serviced by an authorized Delphi technician.Safety Section
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
Failure to follow all safety guidelines prescribed in this document and by governing authorities and regulatory agencies may result in severe injury or death of personnel or machine damage.
Personal injury or death can result from improper maintenance procedures. To avoid injury or death, follow the procedures exactly as stated below.
Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed.
Solution
There are several steps that can be taken to protect the fuel injection pump.Note: Refer to Cat Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations, SEBU6251 for more information about fuel specifications.Specification of Fuel Requirements
The continuous world-wide tendency to increase engine performance and reduce emissions has caused the development of enhanced diesel fuel injection equipment. Increasing injection pressures and multiple injections result in higher operating temperatures, increased contact pressures and reduced clearances. Minimum standards of fuel quality are essential to maintain durability and emission compliance over a longer duration.Fuel parameters such as cetane number, viscosity, density, lubricity, oxidation stability, sulfur, and aromatic content together with the absence of free water and dirt contamination are key parameters required to ensure performance of equipment in service.Biofuels are becoming increasingly available to end-users, fuel sources such as Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME), Soybean Methyl Ester (SME), Palm Oil Methyl Ester (PME) and others, collectively known as Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), are being used as alternatives and extenders for mineral oil derived fuels.General Diesel Fuel Quality
The European fuel standard EN590 embodies the latest fuel quality requirements. Fuel injection equipment may not meet the expected lifetime performance if EN590 fuel or fuel with similar properties is not used. The responsibility falls to the equipment user and/or the fuel supplier to ensure that the fuels used are compatible.AdditivesThe use of additives in
