13 Added information for cleaning the DPF by a Caterpillar approved cleaning device. Introduction
This Special Instruction gives detailed information on cleaning the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for C2.4 Tier 4 Final, C3.3B Tier 4 Final Engines, C3.8 Tier 4 Interim , and C3.8 Tier 4 Final Engines on certain Compact Track Loaders, Compact Wheel Loaders, Mini Hydraulic Excavators, Multi-Terrain Loaders, and Skid Steer Loaders.Do not perform any procedure in this document until you have read and you understand the information contained in this document.References

Thin ceramic wall
The DPF is a filter to capture fine particles (soot and ash) contained in the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. The ash content is inorganic compounds derived from metallic additives contained in burnt lubricating oil. The filter has a honeycomb structure with adjacent vents alternately closed. In addition, by alternately closing the inlet side and the outlet side of the exhaust gas, the thin ceramic wall is used as a filter. These fine particles in the exhaust gas are captured when the particles pass through this wall, then the gas is discharged as clean gas. The material of the filter for the C3.3B and C3.8 engine is silicon carbide.DPF Regeneration and Cleaning
As mentioned above, the filter is a device to capture fine particles. When the filter is clogged with the increase of the engine operating time, the capturing function of the DPF is decreased. When a clog occurs, the filter is “regenerated” by burning and removing the soot. Since the ash cannot be removed by the regeneration of the filter, “clean” the filter to remove the ash at regular intervals. Refer to your engines Operation and Maintenance Manual for service intervals of the DPF. Refer to the table below for information on the different types of regeneration.Cleaning of Ash Based on Maintenance Intervals
Since ash that is deposited in the filter cannot be removed by regeneration, periodical cleaning is required. There is a need to clean the DPF at pre-determined intervals. Refer to your engines Operation and Maintenance Manual for the service intervals.DPF Cleaning Procedure
Ensure Safety and Good Performance for the DPF Cleaning Procedure
Wear goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved P95 or N95 half-face respirator when handling a used Diesel Particulate Filter or Catalytic Converter Muffler. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
The muffler, catalytic converter/muffler, and diesel particulate filter will become extremely hot during engine operation. A hot muffler, catalytic converter/muffler and diesel particulate filter can cause
